Personalize Your Pony and Avoid Stock 'Stangs

There are many reasons Mustangs are famous. It's the original pony car, a two-time winner of Motor Trend Car of the Year, has remained in production for more than four decades, etc, etc, etc. But what has really sustained this fine example of American automotive design and engineering is how endlessly modifiable these cars are. Each individual Mustang owner can transform their car exactly the way they want it, making it as fast, as powerful, as sleek or as sinister as they want. And since AmericanMuscle is the #1 aftermarket Mustang parts dealer on the Internet, it should be obvious where most of these owners go when they want the highest quality products at the best prices.

Did we mention that Mustang owners thrive on speed? Did we even have to mention it? AmericanMuscle knows this, and to make sure you can squeeze every last pony out of that Mustang engine, we offer a number of different Mustang superchargers that are the absolute last word in horsepower and torque. And when we say that, we mean you can generally look to add over 100 HP and around 65 ft-lbs. of torque with these superchargers. These bad boys don't mess around when it comes to getting the ponies out from under the hood and onto the road.

So, now that you've added all those ponies, you're going to need to make sure you're not going to be losing any because of drag or wind resistance. Which means that a Mustang spoiler could be right up your alley. In addition to those previously mentioned benefits, spoilers help to increase fuel efficiency and will give any Mustang an aggressive look that tells people to keep their distance or else you might blow their doors in.

On the few occasions that you're going slow enough for people to see your Mustang, they're more than likely going to be seeing your front end first. And one of the most noticeable customizations you can make to your front end is a new Mustang grille. We stock both upper and lower grilles for Mustangs, sleek mesh grilles or even billet grilles that will shine bright for as long as you own your Mustang.

AmericanMuscle also offers a wide variety of Mustang decals. You're proud of your car and you're proud that you've turned it into something that you can truly call original and your very own, so why not show off your trophy? Bumper inserts are a simple way to do this, as are Lemans stripes and rocker strips. Or maybe you'd even like to sport an AmericanMuscle decal and let everybody know where you got all this great stuff to add to your Pony? Just a suggestion.

More bad news - Honda cancelling NSX replacement

Honda's CEO made his end of the year speech outlining the company's direction for the next year along with changes that they will need to make to deal with the current world economic troubles. The most important change, to enthusiasts anyway, is the cancellation of further development of the V10 powered NSX replacement. Instead, the company will focus on more profitable models along with fuel saving technologies and alternative power sources.

Things just keep getting worse.

Here is the link to the speech summary.

Subaru withdraws from WRC

As I wrote yesterday, the economic disaster we are going through is taking a toll on auto racing. In a stunning announcement, Subaru has decided to end it's factory racing program in the World Rally Championship. Since Suzuki has already announced they too will leave the WRC, this leaves only Citroen and Ford as the only factory backed teams in the series.

This is really sad since the Subaru name is virtually synonymous with rally racing. Subaru entered the rally scene in 1989 by joining forces with Prodrive and together they have won six championship titles and featured some great drivers like Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg.

Not good news for the WRC since they are in the midst of implementing rules changes to lure some other manufacturers to the series and gain back some recently lost popularity. To me it won't be the same without seeing Mitsubishi and Subaru battling it out on the rally circuit.

Financial crisis killing motorsports

The current world financial situation is taking it's toll on the state of international motorsports today. Over the last several weeks, there have been announcements by several manufacturers regarding their factory sponsored participation in various different forms of racing.

Honda has announced that they are pulling out of both Formula One racing and AMA motorcycle racing. Audi and Porsche announced they will be pulling out of the American Le Mans series for 2009 despite the fact that they have both dominated their classes, LMP1 for Audi and LMP2 for Porsche. Additionally, Suzuki says they will not be fielding a factory WRC car any longer and the list continues to grow.

Some of the reasons given have been non financial but there has to be more to it than that. The notion that Audi has nothing left to prove with their racing program can be argued but their diesel powered prototype cars have done nothing but increase awareness and sales of their street going cousins.

So it seems that these decisions are exactly what they appear to be, a way to save money in tough financial times. These companies may not be hurting just yet but they are starting to tighten their belts and prepare for what are shaping up to be a few shaky years to come. Unfortunately, the first to fall are the very expensive factory backed racing teams.

NASCAR, to my disappointment, continues to soldier on.

November 2008 Dream Car of the Month - Vector W8

Sorry for the delay this month. It's getting harder and harder to find unique cars worthy of the Dream Car of the Month.

For the month of November I've selected a rather unique car, the Vector W8. I don't know how many people know about this car as it's 15 minutes of fame really came and went around 20 years ago. The car was designed by Vector's founder Gerald Weichert in the 1970s. The Vector was really the first attempt by an American manufacturer to build a car to compete with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. It didn't turn out well but the cars that resulted will be remembered for two things, their striking design and their outright failure.

The Vector W8 was the first real car from the company which was started in 1971 named Vehicle Design Force. After showing a model mock up in 1971 at the LA Auto Show, the company received some attention from the automotive press but nothing ever came out of it as the car was never produced. In 1978 the company, now known as Vector Aeromotive, designed and built the Vector W2, the predecessor to the W8. The W2 had a claimed top speed of over 230mph but no one was ever allowed to test these claims.

Vector W8

The Vector W8 was the first real "production" car from Vector Aeromotive and it went on sale in 1989. The company finally had secured some financial backing to begin building these cars, each of which was assembled by hand. The price for the W8 in 1989 was around $450,000 and a total of only 17 W8s were ever built for sale between 1989 and 1993. The most famous and disastrous one was sold to Andre Agassi which was subsequently bought back by the company after serious problems with the car. The company claimed that Agassi had demanded the car be delivered for his birthday but it was not finished. The company agreed to deliver the car for the party so he could show it off but warned him not to drive it until they could take it back and finish the work. Allegedly Agassi did not heed the warning which resulted in a near crash.

The Vector W8 featured an aluminum honeycomb semi monocoque structure covered by a body constructed mostly of carbon kevlar. Power was delivered by a racing V8 and a three speed automatic transmission. The engine used twin turbochargers to produce 625HP/650TQ. Top speed was only estimated at over 200MPH but the W2 prototype, powered by a less powerful engine, allegedly reached 242MPH at Bonneville Salt Flats.

Vector/Avtech WX-3R

The company was to follow up the W8 with the WX-3 and WX-3R but they were never produced as the company was taken over in 1993 by Megatech, which at the time owned Lamborghini. Megatech did release a version of the WX-3 with a Lamborghini Diablo V12 in it called the Vector M12. Unfortunately only 14 of these cars were produced by the time the company folded in 1996.

Vector M12

Gerald Weichert eventually won back the rights to the company, now named Vector Supercars, and has displayed a new car the WX-8. Not much is known about the car except what was given when the car was shown. Top speed target is 275+MPH with a 0-60 time of under 3 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 10 seconds at 160MPH. Many doubt it will ever be produced.

Vector WX-8

The Vector W8 is such an outrageous design it could never be mistaken for any other car on the road, if they were produced in such numbers where you could actually see one in person in your lifetime. It was, and still is, one of the most striking designs I've ever seen even if it looks a bit dated today. But so do the Lamborghinis and Ferraris of the time. Unfortunately, the company just didn't have the funds to properly develop what could have been America's first supercar.

Honda CBR 150

Spek detail dari Honda CBR 150
Detailed Specs of Honda CBR 150 ADA disini

It is said that Casey Stoner, Australian MotoGP rider started out on a Honda CBR150. What is the Honda CBR150 technical; the CBR150 comes with a 4 stroke, DOC 4 Valves, water-cooled 149.4cc engine. The cylinder bore is 63.5mm and the stroke is 47.2mm (We can several other smaller cc motorcycle from Honda with the same bore), the compression ration is 11:1 and the ignition is by CDI Direct.

The standard spark plug is an NGK CR8E, but seen also CBR150’s with a Denso U24ESR-N.

The transmission of Honda CBR150 comes with a 6 gear transmission, with a gear ratio from 3.038 for the first gear and a ratio of 0.923 for the last (6th) gear. Honda is using a wet, multiple disk clutch type for this motorcycle.
The dimensions of the bike are 652mm wide by 1,910 in length and 1,065 mm high. With a wheelbase of 1,286mm, all this specification indicates that it is a well-suited motorcycle for some road racing.

The dry weight of the bike is 115kilograms; the full fuel tank capacity is 10 liters unleaded gasoline octane 91 and up.

We need to keep focusing on performance that’s affordable. This keeps us from manufacturing some tailor made individual parts to get the exact performance needs; also changing the bore or coating the cylinder bores with a Ceramic Coating is off they all fall out of the budget.

Okay looking at the standard bike, we are thinking what can we change to get at least some better performance. In the corner of my eye I see my girlfriend walking around with a block of aluminum, assuming that we are going to make a whole new cylinder. But after a quick telephone call with the bike owner, we concluded that it was far out of the budget.

So without the manufacturing of custom made parts we are restricted to the exhaust pipe, air-intake and carburetor. The exhaust pipe is the easiest part, we just bough a racing exhaust set. The air-intake was also easy; we just made the holes bigger so the air can flow much easier into the carburetor. Adjusting the main carburetor main fuel jet, and keeping track on the max and idle performance we got almost 32km/h more speed out of this bike. As we where examined the bike we also found that the chain and sprockets had to be replaced, as the bike clearly ad some more power we selected a small rear and a few teeth bigger front sprocket. The bike was now a fast little monster.
Upgrading a Honda CBR-125R to a CBR-150R

Modify & MaintenanceAs the Honda CBR-125R get more popular, the Honda CBR125 is Britain's top-selling motorcycle for several years. The Honda CBR-125R is a fantastic road legal learner bike perfect for first time rider.

The Honda CBR-125R with its Liquid-cooled, two-valve, single-cylinder, four-stroke, 124.7cc engine produces enough power to get first time riders experience the feeling of riding a sporty bike. But after about one year, most Honda CBR-125 owners want to sell the bike as the 13 horsepower engine doesn’t provide enough power.
But why sell the bike, if you can for as little as 10,000 Baht (217 Euro, or 294 US$) can upgrade the big to a CBR-150R, with original Honda parts. The differences between the Honda CBR-125 and his bigger Thai brother the Honda CBR-150 is only the cylinder, piston and cylinder head assembly.

Buying the original Honda CBR-150 part is for people who plan to visit Thailand for a holiday no problem at all, it is not uncommon that foreigners buy this ‘150cc upgrade kit’ says a shop owner who also shows us quickly several more Honda CBR upgrade variants starting from 130cc to all the way up to 195cc. This third party bore-up sets are even cheaper then the original Honda 150cc set.

The shop owner explains us that with the 195cc bore-up kit, which includes a sport camshaft, piston, cylinder, cylinder head assembly which includes larger DOHS 4-valves and an un-limited ECU/CDI with a simple manual, the modified Honda CBR can produce twice the amount of horsepower compared to the stock Honda CBR-125.

Just when we want to leave the owner of the shop, points out that with more power ‘over 26 horses’ we also need to consider other modifications. And he shows us racing front forks and Brembo brake assemblies with disc brakes that are much larger then standard on the Honda CBR-125. Other stuff we get to see are rear swingarms, racing, air-filters, exhaust pipes, gas rear shocks, and the guy is not stopping ….we need an excuse to get away…

2008 LA Auto Show Highlites

The LA Auto Show is in full swing and, unfortunately for me, no one is willing to pay me to go check these shows out live so I'll just have to make due with the web coverage. There are several new or updated models making their debuts at this show along with some new concepts.

2009 Nissan 370Z
So far the production car I'm most excited about is the 2009 Nissan 370Z which was officially revealed in LA. Sure we've all seen photos of the new Z for weeks now, but we finally have some more details to check out. Aside from the new exterior and interior, major changes have been made to the chassis which is now stronger and lighter. The new 370Z will weigh around 225 pounds less than the 350Z which, along with the bump in HP, should make the car scoot pretty good. The car should have a comparable power to weight ratio of a BMW E46 M3. Not too shabby. That car was capable of mid 4 second 0-60 sprints and mid to low 13 second 1/4 mile times. Handling as well as fuel economy should be improved with the reduction in weight . Mileage for the new 7 speed automatic and 6 speed manual are estimated to be the same 18 city/ 26 hwy.

Standard on the base model 370Z will be 18inch wheels with 225/50/R18 front and 245/45/R18 rear Yokohama ADVAN Sport summer tires. The optional sport package upgrades to lightweight Rays 19inch wheels covered with meaty 245/40/R19 front and 275/35/R19 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. The Sport Package also includes Nissan Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers. Standard brakes are 12.6-inch front/12.1-inch rear.

Only two 370Z models will be offered - base and touring and there will be two option packages - sport and navigation. So far I like what I hear and see for the most part. I never thought the 350Z was a great looking car but it grew on me. I'll have to see the 370Z in person before I make my decision on the styling. With a base price of $29,930, it's a pretty good performance deal.

Honda FC Sport Concept
On the concept car side of things, I'm very intrigued by the surprise Honda FC Sports fuel cell sports car concept. This came out of nowhere and shows that Honda is thinking of the future of sports cars. There aren't a lot of details but the car uses aerodynamics, light weight and the power of the hydrogen fuel cell system from the Honda FCX Clarity to provide performance and zero emissions and zero reliance on fossil fuels.

I really like the look of the car and I hope that it is a hint of what future Honda sports cars will look like. The car is a three seater like the McLaren F1 and has the fuel cell powertrain mounted mid-ship driving the rear wheels. I'm not big on the whole "green" movement or electric cars but if they all looked like this I'd be on board.
